It’s only been half a year since Apple Inc’s iPad first hit colleges, and already a new device is looking to be the big tablet on campus.
A California-based company called Kno Inc plans to launch a tablet by the end of the year that it says will make digital versions of textbooks a lot more attractive to college students. The Kno tablet opens to two screens that are each 14 inches tall and 8 inches wide, and it comes with a stylus for writing on the screen. It also folds back on itself if a user wants to only use one screen. Kno touts the two-screen display as more “book-like” than anything out there.
Already, the iPad is seen as accelerating the sale of e-textbooks. Analysts expect digital texts to be 11 percent of the college book market by 2013.
Kno has received $46 million in debt and equity financing and it plans to use some of those funds to help with its first shipment of the tablet later this year. The company has contracted with Foxconn, a subsidiary of China-based Hon Hai Group, to build the tablet. Other companies such as Samsung are coming out with tablets for the general consumer market, but Kno is specifically aiming its product at college students.
“They’re both white hot markets, e-books and tablets, and when you put them together and provide a great user experience on top of it, that’s where we believe the demand will come,” said Osman Rashid, co-founder of Kno.
But while e-books are hot in the consumer market, growing from about 3 percent of sales last year to 8 percent in the first half of this year, the college e-textbook market has been a lot slower to take hold. Will a new tablet launched by a small company do anything to accelerate e-textbooks?
A walk around the typical college campus turns up a few iPads, but still nothing compared to the number of laptop computers that students carry around the quad.
One key to the growth of e-textbooks, which has implications for publishers such as Pearson PLC and McGraw-Hill Companies, will be whether professors start encouraging students to use e-textbooks instead of physical textbooks — something that has been lacking until now. One common complaint of students who buy e-textbooks is that, in class, their professors will say “turn to page 92? and that anyone using an iPad to read that text will have trouble finding the passage because of the lack of page numbers on digital versions of textbooks.
But some professors are getting wise to tablets and e-textbooks. At the University of Southern California, journalism professor Bill Celis has his education reporting class using iPads. They read texts and crop photos on it, and eventually they will type out blog posts on field assignments. Celis called the iPad “infinitely convenient.”
Kirsi Crowley, 43, a graduate student in the class, likes the device, too. “It’s actually nice when you only take the iPad in your bag,” she said. “It saves your back a bit.”
There is another area of e-textbooks where college professors could get involved, and that is writing their own textbooks independently of the major publishers and distributing it themselves. California State University is spearheading an online repository of free course material called Merlot, which already has 25,000 free texts for instructors to use. Gerry Hanley, senior director of academic technology, said that “publishers will be competing with faculty in producing (course) materials.”
“Now on the World Wide Web, an individual can be a publishing and distribution house themselves,” Hanley said.

On Tuesday, MetroPCS said it has become the first US carrier to launch commercial high-speed wireless Long Term Evolution (LTE) services and and an handset, beating its biggest rival Verizon Wireless to the post. LTE is a next-generation technology Verizon Wireless and AT&T plan to support.
Verizon has promised by the end of this year to offer LTE services for laptop users in 25 to 30 US markets with a population of about 100 million people. But the top US mobile provider has said that it does not expect to start selling its first LTE handsets until 2011.
However, the high-speed MetroPCS service is 0nly available in Las Vegas for now. The company’s Chief Operating Officer Tom Keys said he expects the service to reach most MetroPCS markets by the first quarter of 2011. MetroPCS also said it started selling its LTE phone, the Samsung Craft.
MetroPCS is offering the Samsung Craft for $299, after $50 instant rebate, plus tax. MetroPCS plans to launch another 3-5 handsets in the next 12 months, Keys said.
The executive said he sees the phone appealing to consumers “who want the next best thing and who are willing to pay a little more for the handset.”
“2012 will probably have a larger roadmap in terms of handsets for the entire LTE ecosystem,” said Keys, adding that the company is also considering offering tablet-like devices.
The company is offering 4G LTE services under two service plans – $55 or $60 a month. Its service plans include unlimited phone calls and do not require customers to sign a long-term contract.
MetroPCS said that ninety percent of its customers have been using its handsets for data services. More than half of them rely on MetroPCS handsets as their primary means to get online.

Truely breath taking picture quality
This TV is absolutely stunning. I was actually waiting for the C9000 to come out, but that TV's price is way over the limit. I found out that this TV which is the next step down and actually has the exact same technology as the C9000 minus the touchscreen remote (which can be bought seperately) and the slim profile, not a big deal considering the TV already looks beautiful and is half the price or less then a C9000!
The Nicest TV Right Now
Being an electronics buff, I hold a high standard to quality. This Samsung UN46C8000 is amazing. Picture quality is the best I have ever seen. From the quality remote to the stand this television is the set for you. After it was programmed and user preferences were set, the first HD channel was a golf tournament on Golf Channel HD. Truely breath taking!!! My other HD sets are Plasma ranging from 58 to 32 inches. This is the first LED television I have owned. Being one inch thick, weighing in at 55 lbs it was very easy to handle. The picture quality on non 3D broadcast makes it look like a modified 3D. I have never seen anything like it. My wife who could not care the least about technology, was very impressed with the picture quality.
Amazon made the purchasing experience painless with no sales tax and inside delivery. The delivery staff unbox your television, plug it in to make sure it works and are friendly to boot. Last but not least, you will be very impressed. I am very impressed with this next generation of quality. Samsung you definitely got this one right!!!!

Samsung’s new 3D Active Glasses are the gateway to Samsung 3D entertainment. Impressive both in how they function and in what they allow you to experience, the technology works as follows: When you put them on and look at the screen, the technology first blocks the left and then the right lens. It happens faster than the blink of an eye – so your eye won’t notice it. But when images are shown to each eye separately this “staggered” effect achieves far more lifelike 3D images.
The Samsung 3D stater kit allows you and a friend to experience true Samsung 3D entertainment.

Samsung 3D is great there is an adjustment you need to do
Excellent quality and even better I got them free when I bought the TV and DVD player combination.
Awesome 3D Experience
Hey I purchased the entire setup, the 55 inch Samsung 3D tv, the glasses 5 pair and the dvd starter kit. I played the movie perfect out of the box. In 2D mode made some changes went back to 3D and got the crosstalk that is being mentioned in earlier post. Best Buys setup did not have it. Geek squad not familiar enough with it when they came to the house. I played with the settings with the bluray 3D player on went into the controls for the 3D setting (that only can be adjusted when 3D player is on and running) go into tv menu and under the 3D setting very last option that is blanked out unless 3D player is running is the box (3D Optimize) some are set to 0 some are plus 1. I set mine to -1 and picture cleared right up. 3D optimize when at 0 or +1 I got ghosting or cross talk. Set to -1 and picture calibrated fine. I am not sure what changed this or maybe I made the change when I was adjusting settings earlier. It only shows to allow changes when the 3D player is running. Player, TV and glasses work great. Samsung should put out a quick book on the settings for 3D this to me was important. None of the other settings and adjustments worked and not until I turned on 3D player and looked it all over did I find this adjustment and make the change. Great TV, now we need more movies!

The 3D Gaming Summit had a lot of great sponsors and exhibitors. Here are a few of the displays seen at the 3D Gaming Summit.
Virtual Images the 3D Company had a bunch of 3D Posters on display. You get the 3D effect of these posters as you stare and move past them. They were really cool and really stood out against normal posters.
RealD 3D is the leading global licensor of 3D technologies. Their technology was used in the theaters for movies like How to Train Your Dragon 3D, Clash of the Titans, and Shrek Forever After.
Master Image is one of the fastest going 3D solution providers in the world.
This was at the entryway of the conference room.
The 3D Gaming Summit had a huge projector displaying World of Warcraft in 3D. It would be amazing to play on this screen where your character was your same height.
The summit had many 3d presentations so a pair of 3D glasses was needed. At the end of the day you could recycle the glasses here.
We will be providing more coverage of the individual exhibitors in the next set of posts.

Samsung Plasma Beats LED/LCD
This TV has a superb 2d image, very similar to the other tvs in this price range. This TV is about an inch thick. Styling is great. Makes the Panasonic 3d plasma look like it is from a decade ago as it is 4 inches thick. The Samsung glasses are like twice as comfortable as the Panasonic glasses. The 3d picture is great, almost as good as the Panasonic (but is difficult to say as I was forced to view different source material). It is definately better than the Samsung LED 3d tv which had significant artifact with fast motion in 3d. The best of all: STUNNING 2d to 3d conversion. Couldnt believe it. I watched a Blue Man Group concert and some other stuff, and was blown away. I would never have thought that a processor could extrapolate correctly 3d from 2d but WOW. I have heard quality depends on the source material and I dont know if I was just lucky or what. Far better than expected. The audience clearly extended away into the distance. The performer's hands and the like would reach out towards me. Seemed very natural, and similar to material shot in 3D. 2d to 3d NOT available on the Panasonic.
The Best 3D Plasma TV
I had the c8000 55" LED for over 3 weeks and loved the bright and clear picture, but it was hard to get the settings right for normal viewing, the viewing angle was atrocious vs. even LCD screens, and parts of the screen in dark scenes still have some clouding. I sent the LED back and purchased the c8000 58" plasma. I'm very happy with it so far, especially after tweaking the settings. Now, I have all the pop of the LED but with consistent colors, better blacks and unlimited viewing angle. The details

WOW. Amazing LED set!!
First off I want to be clear about the kind of review this is intended to be. I am not a profession TV rater. I am not a videophile. I am a regular Joe and I am reviewing this for the regular Joe who is thinking about spending more than usual on a good quality television. During the next few months, I'm sure you can find a more professional review from the usual places... But for now, this is my impressions.PICTURE: The picture clarity looks incredible. It's as if I'm discovering HD for the first time. This set replaces a Samsung DLP set, so of course this is a vast improvement. Having said that, I have a newer plasma in the bedroom and this set looks much better than that. As with all new LED sets with 240 Hz, there is a bit of the Spanish Soap Opera/Home Video look to it. Some people really like this, some people don't. I really like it. For those of you that don't, you can always turn this feature down or off. To me this makes the picture look very clear and it makes it stand out from the other sets.
OOKS: This TV looks just amazing. It has a VERY dark black screen. It looks as beautiful turned off as it does on. I was nervous about the brush metal look, but it actually looks very nice and compliments the new chromed four-legged stand.
